Grossman, meanwhile, almost fell into fascist hands on several occasions — fleeing from encircling Panzer tanks as they advanced relentlessly into Soviet territory. Somewhat overweight, bespectacled, Jewish, and an intellectual, Grossman was an unlikely war correspondent.

But he was to become its greatest chronicler — witnessing the battle for Stalingrad and advancing with the Red Army to Berlin and its shattered Brandenburg Gate. This weekend Moscow celebrates the 65th anniversary of the end of the second world war and the defeat of Nazi Germany. Sunday's Kremlin parade on Red Square is the largest in history with 10, troops, military vehicles and aircraft on display. The Soviet Union's wartime allies are taking part for the first time, with British, US and French soldiers marching over the cobbles.
But Russia's bombastic celebrations have been overshadowed by accusations of historical revisionism, in particular over what role, if any, should be allotted to Josef Stalin, whose death in almost certainly spared Grossman from the gulag. Over the past decade the Kremlin has waged a subtle campaign of rehabilitation. It has portrayed the Soviet dictator not as a mass murderer but as a great and ultimately successful wartime leader. The campaign is part of Vladimir Putin's broader ideological effort to restore Russia as a mighty superpower. Ahead of Sunday's drive-and-fly past, Stalin's image has been making a minor comeback — adorning the number bus in St Petersburg this week, for example, and hanging outside several Moscow museums.
He is also reappearing on photos in metro stations.
The plan was dropped at the last minute. Not everyone agrees with Stalin's insidious return.
In an interview with the Guardian, Ekaterina points out that his misplaced faith in Hitler, with whom he signed a non-aggression pact, left the Soviet Union catastrophically unprepared for the Wehrmacht's attack. Despite numerous intelligence reports, Stalin refused to believe that Hitler would invade. Our borders weren't solid enough," she said. Like his epic Life and Fate set around the battle for Stalingrad, the unfinished novel was published only in the late s — more than two decades after Grossman's death in In the west, his reputation has soared in recent years, thanks in part to the publication of the writer's wartime diaries.
To the West, her land is soaked with the blood of her ill-prepared defending armies; to the East, the internal warring factions of days gone by still battle for supremacy; while across all villages and cities in between, the Russian peasants battle for simple survival. In the privacy of her family home, surrounded by the beauty of the Northern Hills, a young girl, Yarna, basks in the safety of her perfect world until one evening, with a knock at the door, the reality of war arrives.
Not just the physical reality, but something far worse, the psychopathic reality of Leon Fishneski. The aftermath of this depraved encounter catapults Yarna into a world of revenge. Driven by pure hatred, she searches for a way to silence the screams in her head, to quell the urge to kill, and to try and find normality. Fate delivers that opportunity when she least expects it. But this young girl is only one cog in a constantly turning wheel of events made up of completely unrelated individuals - a kaleidoscope that ranges from Stalin, the Soviet military, and NKVD, on down to the lowliest soldier and prison guard.
To complete the cast, add in a psychotic 'doctor' and the assortment of refugees in his 'hospital'. All their lives are about to become entwined as they are thrown together by chance, bad luck, and circumstance. Each is ignorant of the part the other plays until it is too late. Get A Copy.

The other reviewers have already covered the synopsis so no point in my rehashing. In all honesty I couldn't rate this novel above the two stars. I couldn't quite become as invested in the characters as others have done, I really didn't get any depth of emotion from them with the exception of the young woman Yarna.

At times I felt this bordered on the horror genre, The mad, psychotic "Doctor" and his experimentation didn't quite ring true to me. It is dark, violent and graphic in parts and certainly not for the squeamish due to the atrocities committed during a time of conflict. I did feel that the dialogue to this novel also had a modern slant to it at times and didn't always gel with me.
